Unique sticky particles formed by harnessing chaos

Phys Org

New research from North Carolina State University shows that unique materials with distinct properties akin to those of gecko feet—the ability to stick to just about any surface—can be created by harnessing liquid-driven chaos to produce soft polymer microparticles with hierarchical branching on the micro- and nanoscale.

Recycled bottle-to-bottle light barrier white opaque PET technically proven for the first time

British Plastics

Sidel used recycled materials in its high-speed PET blowing machine to produce 25 per cent, 50 per cent, and 100 per cent light barrier white opaque bottles.

Does it really make sense to develop PVC-free materials?

Plastics Today

Maybe the use of PVC in the medical sector has been under the radar in the media for some time, as Norbert Sparrow indicates in PlasticsToday in an article on alternatives to PVC. Yet, so much has happened in the world of PVC and plasticizers in recent years that a black-and-white approach to the use of PVC in healthcare does not do the topic justice. Both in terms of the health issues related to phthalate exposure and the recycling of medical devices, groundbreaking developments are ongoing.

New production technique for high-performance polymer could make for better body armor

Phys Org

A team of researchers has found a new way to produce a polymer material called PBO, a product known commercially as Zylon that’s used in bulletproof vests and other high-performance fabrics. The new approach could be useful in making PBO products that resist degradation, a problem that has plagued PBO-based materials in the past.

Mono-material barrier film solution promises to take on aluminum

Plastics Today

Mono-material packaging solutions with barrier properties approaching that of traditional structures such as those employing aluminum foil could be the holy grail of sustainability. One Singapore startup — Aegis Packaging (Hall 7, Level 2, A01) — says it is close to achieving this lofty goal with its O2X barrier layer product.
Orientation of polyethylene film coupled with a thin polymer-ceramic hybrid barrier layer, is the key to achieving mono-material packaging structures.

PVC- and phthalate-free products multiply in medical and other sectors

Plastics Today

PVC and phthalate plasticizers have dropped out of the news cycle of late, but they are still front of mind for plastics processors and materials suppliers, as evidenced by a pair of news releases distributed today. Medical technology manufacturer Raumedic (Helmbrechts, Germany) reiterated in its press release the development of PVC- and plasticizer-free plastic products for medical tubing and related applications.

Coke bottle made with plastic from the sea is a world first

British Plastics

Breakthrough technology can transform low-quality plastic into high-quality food-grade packaging.

Dow develops new resin made with 70 percent recycled plastic

Brisith Plastics

Dow Agility CE is the first post-consumer recycled (PCR) product offering of Dow’s plastics circularity portfolio to incorporate a high percentage of post-consumer plastic waste.

SONGWON to launch new range of flame- retardants at K 2019

British Plastics

SONGWON will launch its new range of flame-retardants and underpin ongoing commitment to sustainability at K 2019.
