Earlier this month, Mitsubishi launched its Outlander plug-in hybrid in Thailand, and now, local assembly of the petrol-electric SUV has begun. Production of the PHEV kicked off at the automaker’s Laem Chabang plant on December 21, and market deliveries are scheduled to begin in January. The model isn’t based on the new fourth-gen Outlander, which is slated to make its world debut next February, but is a variation of the current third-gen model.

Thailand is continuing to explore ways to promote the take-up of electric vehicles (EVs) in a bid to reduce air pollution in the country. A possible route is to impose a higher tax on vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE) so buyers will be prompted to look at EVs instead. As the Bangkok Post reports, the government is scheduled to meet car companies next month to discuss such a proposal.

Illegal export of Myanmar’s natural rubber to Thailand and re-export by Thailand damage the country’s reputation, according to the Myanmar Rubber Planters and Producers Association (MRPPA). “This matters with the country’s image. Our products are illegally sent to other countries and the recipient country of Myanmar rubber re-exports them to other foreign markets under its label. Otherwise, it damages our country’s image. We need to build national branding,” said MRPPA Chair U Aung Myint Htoo.

The growing demand of rubber gloves during the coronavirus pandemic, shortage of natural rubber, the appreciation of US dollar against Kyat are the reasons of the price rise, said U Khaing Myint, secretary of Myanmar Rubber Planters and Producers Association (MRPPA).
