Bold Move from Clamshells to Film-Sealed Thermoforms Cuts Plastic 33%

PlasticsToday

It was a “berry good” category-changing innovation: Not only was losing the hard plastic lid a huge win for plastic reduction, with per-pack plastic cut by 33%, the thermoforms are made of rPET. Naturipe Farms’ heat-seal packaging innovation into film-sealed rPET thermoform packaging will eliminate 48 metric tons of plastic packaging in 2020.

New ‘Injection Printing’ Technology Advances 3D-Printing Capabilities
PlasticsToday

The technique developed by a UMass Lowell researcher incorporates elements of injection molding to increase the production rate of 3D printing while improving part strength, stiffness, and strain-to-failure properties.
Rethinking Packaging as Consumers Shift to Ecommerce

PlasticsToday

The pandemic has accelerated the shift toward ecommerce purchases. For many companies, designing packaging for ecommerce distribution was put on the back burner.  Although, the percentage of overall online sales is likely to come down somewhat post-pandemic, the likelihood that there has been a permanent seismic shift in the way people purchase good is quite high. So, if you haven’t already started, now is the time to look at your packaging and how it performs in the ecommerce channels.  Those that do not, are likely to be left behind. Is your package “store-to-door” distribution ready?

The Race for a Coronavirus Vaccine Spurs Syringe, Vial Production

Plastics Technology

As the world eagerly awaits a vaccine to inoculate against Covid-19, molders of syringes and vials are boosting production to meet what will be desperate, crushing need. SiO2’s plastic vials start as injection molded preforms that are stretch blowmolded and coated with silica to provide barrier and protect the contained pharmaceutical.

Additives: Additive Masterbatch Boosts rPET Performance
Plastics Technology

A proprietary pelletized additive masterbatch from Aquadye Fibers, Danville, Ky., is said to allow compounders to elevate recycled PET (rPET) performance equivalent to that of nylon 6. The addition of 10% of new Nylester to rPET during pellet extrusion, allows compounders to expand the use of recycled PET applications to a both injection molded and extrusion applications, ranging from packaging to gears to automotive underhood applications.
Germany to Ban Single-Use Plastics
Plastics Technology

German officials have voted to end the use of a number of throwaway plastic products in Europe’s biggest economy starting in July of next year as European Union member states prepare to implement the ban throughout the trading bloc. The German cabinet approved the ban in late June, but the measures require the approval of legislators in Berlin’s lower and upper houses.
Ineos Styrolution, Recycling Technologies to Partner on Recycling Polystyrene
Plastics Technology

Ineos Styrolution signed a joint development agreement (JDA) with Recycling Technologies to advance the development of recycling of polystyrene in Europe. Both companies share the same goals to make plastics a sustainable material. This agreement recognizes the commercial value of post-consumer plastic waste to prevent this important resource being incinerated or ending up in landfills.
Materials: Medical TPEs Formulated Without Animal Derivatives
Plastics Technology

Eight new grades have been added to the healthcare portfolio of Versaflex TPEs from Avient Corp. (formerly PolyOne), Avon Lake, Ohio. The injection-moldable Versaflex HC 3810 series is formulated without animal derivatives and offers a wide range of durometers to serve a variety of medical device applications.

PlasticsToday

Continuous Composites’ technology enables the printing of custom, large-scale composite parts with high-performance mechanical properties for applications in the aeronautics, automotive, and energy sectors.
L’Oreal’s PHL sustainability efforts include labeling, bio-based packaging
BusinessWorld

After announcing in June its efforts to be green and sustainable, French personal care giant L’Oreal has outlined its sustainability efforts in the Philippines, including environment and social impact labeling, and a goal to have recycled or bio-based packaging for its products. It also gave an update regarding the removal of “whitening” labels on its packaging. “L’Oréal has put sustainability as a fundamental priority.
Masks made from abaca cut COVID’s plastic waste
Manila Bulletin

Fiber from a relative of the banana tree could replace plastic in millions of face masks and hospital gowns the world is making to fight the coronavirus. Abaca — a fiber from the Philippines used in teabags and banknotes — is as durable as polyester but will decompose within two months, said Philippine fiber agency head Kennedy Costales. “With this pandemic, if we all buy masks made of synthetic fiber, they will pile up in dumpsites because they take so long to decompose,” he said.
