Polystyrene Shown to Be One of the Most Sortable Plastics in Waste Stream
PlasticsToday

Recent testing by a supplier of sensor-based sorting systems for recycling plants has shown that polystyrene (PS) is not only made for recycling, but also made for sorting, according to an announcement from Ineos Styrolution (Frankfurt, Germany). The testing was performed under the umbrella of Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) using near-infrared (NIR) sensor technology developed by Tomra (Asker, Norway).

Plastics Technology

Half of the matrix for the new semi-finished products consists of recycled material originating from the recycling of reusable polycarbonate water bottles.
The Pros and Cons of Thermoforming, and Why It's Necessary
PlasticsToday

While there is a general move away from the use of plastics for disposable packaging, there is still a great need for products made out of reusable (and ideally recyclable) plastics. Possibly the most obvious example of this is large-scale packaging, such as handling systems, but there are many others from plastic toys to cafeteria trays and car windshields. You’ll even find airline seats made from recycled plastic. Many of these products are made through a process known as thermoforming.
New Developments in Recycled Content Labels

Avery Dennison and Sabic are working on a recycled polypropylene (rPP) label; UPM Raflatac announces new recycled content film labels.
Tests Reveal Novel Ways to Improve Recyclability of Difficult-to-Recycle Plastics
PlasticsToday

Novel new findings have emerged from compatibility tests involving the ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers in the recycling process. RecyClass, a cross-industry initiative to advance plastic packaging recyclability within Europe, will use these findings to update and enhance its Design for Recycling Guidelines for PE-HD Natural and Colored Containers.
Low-Profile, Injection-Molded Hooks Introduced for Medical Applications
PlasticsToday

New low-profile hooks that can be injection molded directly into plastic parts have been added to the Aplix inter-mold portfolio for medical and orthopedic applications. Inter-mold technology is a patented one-step injection-molding process that streamlines and optimizes manufacturing practices by eliminating the material and associated labor costs of attaching hook tapes to plastic. The inter-mold process is compatible with a range of injection-molded thermoplastics.
Flexible Packaging with Impact: FPA Gold Winners
PlasticsToday

The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) announced the winners of its 64th annual awards competition in conjunction with the 2020 FPA Annual Meeting March 4-6 in Bonita Springs, FL.
Batman-Inspired Shield Would Protect Wearers from Coronavirus
PlasticsToday

We’ve been told that that we may need to make some major lifestyle adjustments in the wake of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus. How about going about your daily business wearing protective gear like the device seen here that would shield you from the virus by sterilizing itself using ultraviolet rays? The Be a Bat Man device is designed to maintain a sterile environment within the wearer’s bubble.
ASTM Plastics Committee Revises Resin ID Code
PlasticsToday

A revision to ASTM International’s standard for resin identification code, or RIC (known as D7611), brings greater specificity to resin code ‘1.’ ASTM’s plastics committee (D20) invites interested participants to join in further revisions of the standard, as code numbers and mechanisms for adding codes continue to be clarified. Resin code ‘1’ is an equilateral triangle with the number one inside it, and below it the letters “PETE” or “PET,” an abbreviation for polyethylene terephthalate.
Ten Desirable Design Practices for Healthcare Plastics
PlasticsToday

The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) drafted a set of guidelines for medical device manufacturers and designers that establishes best practices for designing recyclable medical products and packaging. PlasticsToday has produced an infographic listing the HPRC’s 10 desirable design practices for healthcare plastics.
No-added-solvent conformal coating can be sprayed, and dries in seconds
Electronics Weekly

Dow has introduced a solvent-less but sprayable silicone conformal coating that cures in seconds under UV light. Called Dowsil CC-8030, it is a one-part product that also includes moisture-cure for the nooks and crannies that UV cannot reach so well. “Other silicones support UV curing, but none are conformal coatings with a low enough viscosity for spray.
