Research Project Probes Potential for AI-based Sorting in Postconsumer Polypropylene

Project OMNI, a collaborative research program directed by Recycleye, Valorplast and TotalEnergies, is developing a solution for mechanically recycling polypropylene (PP) food packaging back into food-contact applications. The project leverages machine learning and computer vision technology, coupled with efficient decontamination of food-grade PP from postconsumer waste. The Project OMNI approach to polypropylene sorting does not require changes to package design.

FDA releases safety notice on syringes made in China, monitoring reports

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety notice to consumers, health care providers and facilities that it is evaluating plastic syringes made in China for potential device failures. FDA is monitoring the reports of safety issues associated with “several Chinese manufacturers of syringes,” the Nov. 30 notice said.

Perfetti Van Melle Philippines Managing Director David Roos on Thursday said the company, which produces brands like Mentos, Chupa Chups, and Fruit-tella, is on track to hit 50% more than the required target under the law.

Failure to recycle cost Malaysia RM291m in 2023 alone, says SWCorp

Malaysia could have saved RM291 million this year if it had recycled items instead of just throwing them out, according to Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Husaini Abdul Rahman. He said nearly one tonne of goods that could have been recycled were binned this year, The Star reported today. The amount of discarded goods comes to 6.96 per cent out of 35.38 per cent of the national recycling rate.
